Born in Harlem, NY, and raised on the Caribbean islands of Antigua and St. Thomas in the USVI, Empress Rhymez has been shaped by a rich cultural heritage and an eclectic musical upbringing. Her family roots trace back to Antigua, where her father, a preacher and gospel singer-songwriter, fostered her early exposure to music. Moving to St. Thomas at the age of nine brought both new experiences and significant challenges, as she faced bullying for her accent and strict upbringing. Through these trials, Empress found her voice—first as a defender of those like her, and eventually as an artist using music as a release. Growing up, music was always in the background of Empress Rhymez's life. Her father’s gospel compositions, her brothers’ collections of hip-hop, reggae, and dancehall, and her mother’s love for gospel and country music all contributed to her versatility as an artist. When she was 13, she moved back to Antigua briefly before relocating to the Atlanta area. This transition period brought about a transformation in her personality and laid the groundwork for her powerful voice as an artist, blending influences from the Caribbean, the church, and the streets of Metro Atlanta. Empress Rhymez' dream is to be a Grammy-winning songwriter and write for other artists. She realized that her health issues would make it difficult to perform and travel often. In addition to her musical achievements, Empress Rhymez received a Youth Advocate award at 19 for her work with the youth in her community. Her commitment to using her voice for positive change is reflected both in her lyrics and in her community involvement.
