Born, Gerald Lee Conway Mims, in Sharples, WV, to a coal miner father; and a mother who made sure both grandfathers were acknowledged in his middle names; Jerry Mims tells this story: "I was in Branson Missouri to see what I could get into and picked up a sponsor named Jory Sherman, the great nephew of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman who had burned nearly all of the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia in November of 1864! Mr. Sherman took me to a few studios in Missouri, and once; when asked to play a few songs in an outer office; this one old guy sitting behind a desk called on the intercom for some others to come and listen! Jory told me later that old guy happened to be the great Jimmie Rogers, a singer who had had two major hits in 1957 with “Honeycomb” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine!” So, long story short, one of the guys in the room asks me what my name is, and I tell him, Jerry Lee Conway Mims, there is a pause and a slight silence, and then someone says, "Son, we see how talented you are and how hard it may be for you to break into C&W cause you're Black, but you don't want to make up a name so country it's unbelievable!" I remember some of them nodded in agreement! But then this; The first time I ever saw or heard real knee slappin' country-accented laughter, was when I showed them my drivers license! I smile about that to this day! It may have taken a while for GLC Mims to allow these songs to be offered to the public, but of the eight songs offered in this collection, we guarantee; No matter how you like your coffee, there's a flavor here you'll love!
