Where it all started
Yourz Truly aka Lemar Rocka was born Sharlemar Smith on May 30. Truly later on would grow and move frequently in schools across the country. His mother did what she had to in order to raise 3 kids as a single parent. He spent a large chunk of time in the Washington DC area known as the DMV. “I would change schools two, three times a year sometimes,” Truly later recalled. He had no close friends, kept to himself and was treated like an outcast at each new school. As he grew older his mother remarried with his sisters father and he grew more distant from people and deeper into the arts. He was a troubled teen landing himself in many dangerous situations that could've ended his life. Later he changed the direction of his life and channeled that energy into music. He had creative ideas that he wanted to showcase in a music video, but was not able to afford the high cost of a videographer and editor. It was at that very moment that he knew in order to be seen and heard he would have to do what hasn't been done before. "Im not only the artist in front of the camera, i'm the artist behind it", he said. By his early twenties he had lived in places such as New York, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, California, Florida, and Michigan. For years he struggled with homelessness all while sleeping in his car, bouncing from house-to-house, sleeping on couches and basement floors. As one could imagine this itinerant lifestyle left a large impact on his personality and Rap style. These days he has worked in television, for Senior Producers of the hit television shows American Idol, and So You Think You Can Dance. In music, he mentored sister & New Death Row/Boss City Music Group affiliated artist B. Davighn, and he has opened an multitude of shows with artists like Big Sean, Method Man, Miguel and many more.
